The New RLSS UK Bronze Medallion - The One That Counts

Friday 2nd July 2004

The new RLSS UK Bronze Medallion Awards is launched in July

T H E O N E T H A T C O U N T S

What is the Bronze Medallion?
A high-level lifesaving award that trains you how to react in an emergency either
on land or in the water.

What kind of things will I learn to do?
There are three main subject areas:
1. How to stay safe around water
2. What to do if someone is drowning
3. Performing resuscitation to try to save someone.
While learning to save somebody’s life, you will also become a better swimmer, get fitter and meet new friends.

How old do I need to be to take the Bronze Medallion?
If you do not have any other lifesaving certificates, you will need to be at least 13years old to take the test for the award. If you already have some lifesaving experience, you may be able to take the Bronze Medallion at the age of 12.

Do I need to be a strong swimmer to train for the Bronze Medallion?
If you can swim 100 metres in four minutes you are good enough to start training for the Bronze Medallion. Your confidence and speed in the water will improve as you train for the award.

How long does it take to complete?
It will take a minimum of 20 hours of training. Normally lifesaving Clubs run a
Bronze Medallion class weekly, and you will need to go for around 10-12 weeks.

Will I need to be fit?
You will need to have a basic level of fitness. But, the great thing about training for the Bronze Medallion is that you will get fitter during the course.

Will I just be tested on my skills in the water?
No, you will also have to take a theory and dry land practical test. You will need to pass the theory test to pass the Bronze Medallion. Don’t worry, all the information you need to pass is in the candidate pack which will be given to you when you sign up for your course.

Can I go on to do other awards after I finish the Bronze Medallion?
Yes, many people use the Bronze Medallion as a stepping-stone and go on to train as a pool or beach lifeguard. Alternatively, you could learn how to train new lifesavers or try the sport of Lifesaving, a great way to practice, improve and test your skills and knowledge.

Do I need any special equipment to do the award?
No, all you will need is your swimwear and clothes to swim in. The teacher who
takes the class will provide any specialist equipment that you will need to do the
award.
